From Roots to the Table: How a Garden Bed Became a Story of New Beginnings
When I left Croatia in 2019, I did not leave behind only the house I had spent years building. I also left behind a garden I never had the chance to plant, plans that had to wait, and a part of myself that was still searching for a new path. Life took me far away, across borders, to a new country, among new people and new seasons. There, I learned once again how to build a home, not from bricks and wood, but from patience, adaptation, and the faith that everything would eventually fall into place. Years later, I returned home, and then something completely unexpected happened. Davor and I, each on our own side of an island and a continent, began thinking about the same things: soil, compost, tomatoes, and how to grow our own food.

While Davor was building his first raised garden beds on Krk, he sent me photos of every new step. In his messages, I could feel that childlike joy of creating that we rarely see in adults. Not long afterwards, four old pallets fit into his car, and he came to visit me. That weekend, our first shared green garden bed was born. We laid cardboard at the bottom, covered it with branches and old wood, added compost, then soil, layer by layer, just as life itself is built. Foundations are not visible at first, because the most important part always remains hidden beneath the surface. Nature understands this better than we do. Roots grow in silence first, and only later do leaves, flowers, and fruits appear.

Today, as I watch the first tomatoes ripen and the zucchini spread into every free corner of the garden bed, I see much more than vegetables. I see all the small steps that brought us here. I see a return, I see togetherness, I see the belief that something new can grow even after years of change. And perhaps that is the greatest lesson of sustainable gardening. Nothing is waste. Old branches become new life, compost becomes nourishment, seeds become fruit. And two people who once built their paths separately begin building something together—from roots to the table, from an idea to reality, from soil to life. That is why I do not think we planted only a garden bed. I think that this spring, we planted a new chapter.

These garden beds were never just about vegetables. They grew out of conversations, shared plans, weekends spent with tools in our hands, and the desire to create something of our own. Perhaps that is why every new leaf and every new harvest brings us so much joy, because a part of our shared story is growing within them too.

From roots to the table. This pie deserves a story of its own, coming soon. 😊

Život me odveo daleko, preko granica, u novu zemlju, među nove ljude i nova godišnja doba. Davor i ja, svatko na svojoj strani otoka i kontinenta, počeli smo razmišljati o istoj stvari, o zemlji, o kompostu,o rajčicama, o tome kako uzgojiti vlastitu hranu.
Možda zato svaki novi list i svaki novi plod donose toliko radosti jer u njima raste i dio naše zajedničke priče.
Od korijena do stola. Ova pita zaslužuje svoju priču, uskoro stiže. 😊
Trenuci koje je zabilježio Davor.
